Production of a unique state of deep rest Research shows that Transcendental

Meditation produces a unique state of deep rest. Here are three indicators of deep rest that show this result: On the left: During Transcendental Meditation, respiration, or breathing rate, decreases significantly, which is a sign of deep rest. In the middle, lower skin conductance*, an indication of greater calm and less anxiety, is also reduced through Transcendental Meditation. And at the right, plasma lactate, which is associated with anxiety, has been found to significantly decrease through Transcendental Meditation. Typically, plasma lactate level is LESS when the body is in a state of rest. * [Note: If asked: In skin conductance tests, two electrodes are placed near each other on the skin. Skin conductance is a measure of the electricity that passes between two points on the skin. When skin is moist, as happens with greater anxiety, skin conductance is higher. When anxiety is lower, skin conductance is lower. The blue bar going down shows significantly lower skin conductance among those practicing Transcendental Meditation, compared to people just sitting with their eyes closed.
